Shoulder Injuries

Shoulder injuries, often caused by overuse or acute trauma, commonly involve rotator cuff tears, tendinitis, bursitis, dislocations, or sprains. Symptoms include pain with overhead activity or at night, instability, and limited motion. Initial care often includes RICE (Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation) and NSAIDs, with physical therapy or surgery for severe cases.

  • Rotator Cuff Tears/Tendonitis: Inflammation or tears in the muscles/tendons that hold the shoulder in place, frequently caused by repetitive overhead motion (e.g., swimming, tennis) or wear-and-tear.
  • Shoulder Dislocation/Instability: The arm bone pops out of the socket, often from a fall or hit.
  • Separated Shoulder (AC Joint Injury): Damage to ligaments connecting the shoulder blade to the collarbone.
  • Frozen Shoulder (Adhesive Capsulitis): Thickening of the shoulder capsule, causing extreme stiffness and pain.
  • Impingement Syndrome: Tendons are squeezed between bones, common in athletes.
  • Fractures: Broken bones, typically in the collarbone (clavicle) or upper arm (humerus).

Symptoms of a Serious Injury

  • Inability to move the arm
  • Shoulder joint appears deformed or "out of place"
  • Sudden, severe swelling
  • Numbness, tingling, or coldness in the arm or hand
  • Persistent pain that interferes with sleep

Treatment Approaches

  • RICE: Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation.
  • Medications: Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as ibuprofen to reduce pain and swelling.
  • Physical Therapy: Specialized exercises to restore strength and range of motion.
  • Activity Modification: Avoiding overhead activities, heavy lifting, or actions that trigger pain.
  • Surgery: Required for complete tears, severe dislocations, or injuries that do not improve with conservative treatment.

When to Seek Medical Care
Consult a doctor if pain does not improve with home treatment, lasts more than 2-4 weeks, or if you experience significant weakness, numbness, or signs of infection (fever/swelling).
