Hand and Wrist Injuries

Hand and wrist injuries often arise from falls, repetitive strain, or sports, resulting in sprains, fractures, tendonitis, or nerve compression. Common symptoms include swelling, pain, bruising, and reduced grip strength. Immediate care usually involves the RICE method (Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation) and immobilization, particularly if a deformity or severe pain is present.

Types of Hand & Wrist Injuries

  • Wrist Sprains/Strains: Ligaments or muscles stretched or torn by falls or twisting.
  • Fractures: Broken bones, such as the scaphoid (thumb side) or radius.
  • Tendinitis: Inflammation from repetitive motion.
  • Carpal Tunnel Syndrome: Nerve compression causing numbness/tingling.
  • Trigger Finger: A finger becomes trapped in a bent position.
  • De Quervain's Tenosynovitis: Painful inflammation at the base of the thumb.

Symptoms of Injury

  • Acute Pain/Deformity: Suggests a fracture.
  • Swelling and Bruising: Common in both sprains and breaks.
  • Numbness or Tingling: Often indicates nerve involvement.
  • Reduced Strength: Difficulty lifting objects or opening jars.
  • Clicking/Popping: Common in ligament tears.

Treatment and Care

  • Immediate Care: Remove jewelry, rest the hand, and apply ice for 10-20 minutes,.
  • Support: Use a wrist brace or splint to stabilize the area.
  • Medical Care: Seek medical attention for severe pain, inability to move the hand, or signs of deformity.

Common Causes

  • Falls: Specifically landing on an outstretched hand (FOOSH).
  • Repetitive Use: Long-term, repetitive actions like typing, playing instruments, or sports.
  • Impact: Accidents during contact sports.
